Pay it forward.
What is the Birthday Project?
2 kids share the same birthday.
1 of them receives gifts, the other doesn't.
Our goal is to match these 2 kids to each other to make sure that they both have a happy birthday.
Because every kid should have a present to open on their birthday, and every kid can learn something about generosity along the way.
How it started and how it works
The idea for the Birthday Project came about after my daughter Mia’s 5th birthday party. Mia had plenty of friends and family over – and just about everyone brought presents for her to open. She was pretty excited, of course. She tore through the presents and had such a blast going through them all.
Then she started thinking – “I bet there are other 5 year olds who also have the same birthday as me, but don’t have any presents to open.”
The world is such a great place. Toronto is such a great place, though It’s not fair that 28.6% of children living here live in very low-income households (according to the Toronto Star, Oct 13, 2015).
The Birthday Project exists solely to make sure that every kid has a present to open on their birthday. We can’t provide everything these kids want or need. But for one day – their birthday – we might be able to provide them with a gift they may not otherwise receive.
If you have a little one at home who you think would want to give away some of their presents to another little one who isn’t as fortunate, GET INVOLVED! If you’ve got a little one who you fear won’t get a new, wrapped present to open on their birthday, GET INVOLVED! Even if you don’t have a child with a life-lesson to teach, absolutely GET INVOLVED! This entire movement is really about PAYING IT FORWARD. It’s something we can all easily do, and would introduce some much-needed happiness into the world.
We are currently working to deliver the gifts to children staying with or being assisted by the Red Door Family Shelter in Leslieville, Eastview Neighbourhood Community Centre in Blake-Jones and we’ll continue to look for ways to deliver to more children across the city.
Send us a note in the form below by providing your name and email address, and we’ll get you started on the next step. If you’re involving your little one, we’ll try and match 2 kids with the same birthday (or close enough), so they can share the birthday experience and learn about the generosity that is within all of us.
